“I know it’s really gross.” Ky felt her heart break as she finished off her hair. Without thinking she bent down and kissed on the top of her head. “Well let’s fix that shall we?” She stood up, grabbing the bottle of vanilla shampoo/conditioner and popping off the cap.
Letting a small dot form in her hand she giggled lightly to herself. “You’re going to smell delicious when you get out of here. She put her hand gently on Ritzy’s head, rubbing the soap into her hair and digging lightly into her scalp. She’s so sweet, not one complaint out of her. She piled her hair on top of her head and played with it, giggling she glanced down at her. “It’s not getting in your eyes is it?”
She glanced closer and inspected her, satisfied that she was doing a good job protecting her eyes. “Alright honey.” She removed her hand and stood up, reaching for the faucet again and turning on the water. Testing it for its warmth she smiled warmly at Ritzy, she grabbed the shower faucet and pulled it down, “Go ahead and tilt your head back while I wash out the soap."

“Well let’s fix that shall we?" Ky said leaning down and kissing the girl lightly. Ritzy froze, her mouth hung open slightly. That...that was love. In that instant Ritzy knew she loved Ky for all her kindness, beauty, and strength.
"I want to be just like her when I grow up," Ritzy thought with a smile, as Ky proceeded to massage shampoo into a lather on her head. Again the young girl turned into a cat and leaned into it.
“It’s not getting in your eyes is it?” Ky asked moving closer to her and intently staring.
"Nuh-uh," Ritzy shook her head. Ky was doing an expert hair-washing job.
“Go ahead and tilt your head back while I wash out the soap," Ky said as she adjusted the water to the right temperature.
"You're so nice Ky," Ritzy said, still thinking about the kiss the woman had planted on the top of her head. Ritzy really did admire her. She leaned back and let the clean water wash over her slender frame. "I mean it!" Ritzy said more instantly, "You're the nicest person I've evah met! Besides the--"
Ritzy had been about to mention the angels again but stopped. "You can tell her anything," the angel said brightly, "She has more in common with you than you know, so don't worry about guarding your heart when around her... That's our job."
Ritzy thought this over and came up with something else to say entirely on her own, "You're much nicer than the last person I lived with..." Her voice was very quite, hardly audible above the running water.

Ky made sure Ritzy was completely soap free before she turned off the water. Setting back the faucet she smiled warmly at her, she had noticed her sudden silence and figured now would be the best time as any. Grabbing the large towel from the counter she wrapped it around Ritzy, giggling at how the towel seemed to swallow her up.
“Ritzy,” She picked her up and sat on the lid of the toilet, standing the tiny girl in front of her. She kept the smile warm on her face, and she hoped her eyes didn’t betray the sadness she felt in her heart. Rubbing her body down softly she couldn’t help but pull her into a small hug. “If there is something you want to talk about, anything, know that I’m here and willing to listen.” She kept her in the hug, holding back the tears that were right under her closed eyes.

Katan had set the bags and boxes of clothes on the couch in the living room, figuring Ritzy could pick out her room after dinner. In the kitchen he wore his chef’s cap, like he always did, and the new apron he had bought.
Kiss The Cook! He chuckled when he saw it in the store and decided he’d get some sort of reaction out of Ky. Working around the large kitchen he cut and chopped vegetables and mild spices, making two different sauces for his pasta. In the oven was some bread left over from last night, and he continually eyed the chocolate cake on the counter.
He continued to walk to the stairway and see if he could hear anything from the bathroom. But he managed to hear was Ky’s giggling. He mixed the bland sauce in it’s pan and added just a touch of cumin to it.

“If there is something you want to talk about, anything, know that I’m here and willing to listen," Ky said after hoisting the small girl out of the tub into a warm towel-hug.
Ritzy lowered her gaze, thinking deeply. She knew Ky would listen to her, she and the Angel had made that perfectly clear, but she just couldn't put it into words. The girl shook her head causing small droplets of water to sprinkle around the bathroom. "I...I don't wanna' talk about it," the girl lied through her teeth. Of course she wanted nothing more than to have someone else help her support her burdens, but it was just so hard to put it into words.
It was too hard.
Frustrated by her own inability to bring up the subject of her past Ritzy pouted and looked up towards the ceiling. Why did there have to be so much pain in the world? It didn't make any sense! "Why can't everyone be nice like you?" Ritzy wailed, her irritation emphasized with a stamp of her foot. "It's not fair Ky, it's not fair!"

“It’s not fair Ky, it’s not fair.” Ky watched her small form grow tense from her anger. Ky let a small smile grace her lips as she looked down. “I know Ritzy, I know life isn’t fair. And you of all people have been handed a horrible view of the world.” She leaned forwards again, bringing her back into a hug.
“I won’t make you talk,” She moved back again, taking the towel to rub at her hair. “When you’re ready just know that you have Katan and me to talk to. And we’ll always be here for you. No matter what.” With that Ky stood back up again and smiled warmly at her. She pointed to the small pile of clothes on the counter.
“Now I hope those fit, if not let me know and we’ll try to find something else for you.” Smiling Ky grabbed the dirty clothes by the sink and walked to the door. The poor thing, she’d been through so much. And she’s so young. “When you’re done Katan and I will be downstairs and if I’m correct,” She opened the door a little bit to sniff the hallway. “I think dinner is done.”
“Will you be okay getting dressed by yourself?” She asked, warmly, ready to help her if she needed.

"I know Ritzy, I know life isn’t fair. And you of all people have been handed a horrible view of the world. I won’t make you talk... When you’re ready just know that you have Katan and me to talk to. And we’ll always be here for you. No matter what." How could someone be only human when they were that caring and understanding of others?
Pointing to the new clothing on the counter Ky added, “Now I hope those fit, if not let me know and we’ll try to find something else for you. When you’re done Katan and I will be downstairs and if I’m correct, I think dinner is done. Will you be okay getting dressed by yourself?"
Ritzy looked toward the door and breathed in, "It smells good..." she said slowly, "And I don't think I need any help getting dressed..." Underneath her gratitude a horrendous thought struck into the young girl's mind from seemingly no where. "...Even though I'm not as good at getting dressed as getting undressed..." The girl shook her head violently once Ky was out of the room. Where did that thought come from, it seemed so unlike her despite everything she'd been through. Disgusting.
As Ritzy reached for the pile of clothing she couldn't help staring at her clean skin and frowning.
Clean. But. Not.
Pulling on the new clothes Ritzy tried to be rid of her depressing thoughts by admiring all the finer details of the clothing. It was soft, pink, feminine. Normal. She liked them very much. A pair of pink shorts embroidered with little yellow flowers...and a matching tank top, plain. Yes, these were wonderful.
"I am happy with all you've done for me today," Ritzy said staring up at the ceiling once she had finished dressing. A few minutes later the girl made her way slowly down the stairs. The house was unfamiliar, but not threatening, she wanted to take everything in... When she arrived in the kitchen she found that although her stomach was in a nervous knot, she was still hungry. It did smell delicious after all.

Ky stood outside the bathroom door, peeking in on Ritzy for just a few moments, before she turned to the left and walked slowly down the hall. She held the sweat shirt and shorts loosely in her hands as she stepped into the laundry room. Sighing she leaned against the shadowed wall and closed her eyes. Allowing the tears she had been holding in to cascade down her cheeks.
What happened to you Ritzy? She hugged the dirty clothes to her body. How did such a sweet girl like you end up like this? She threw the clothes into the washer’s open door and pulled down the sleeves of her jacket to wipe at her tears. With one last shuddering sigh she left the laundry room and stepped quietly down the stairs.
In the kitchen Katan was finishing off the noodles for the pasta. His face stuck over the pot as he slowly turned them, his eyes glowing happily. I hope Ritzy likes pasta. Standing up he turned to the counter and smiled warmly at Ky, who had a brow raised at him, he chuckled lightly. “What?”
Shaking her head Ky rolled her eyes. “You never get this excited when you make me food.” She giggled lightly walking over to the bread and stealing a piece before turning back to stare at Katan.
“Cause you’re not cute anymore.” Katan stuck out his tongue as he went back to strain the noodles. Ky gasped and crossed her arms. Sticking her nose in the air she scoffed. “Well I feel so unloved.” She sniffled lightly, before turning back towards Katan with one eye peeked open.
Katan scoffed as he set the noodles in a large bowl. “Well I have a new girl now.” He smirked to himself, Ky gasped again before throwing her half eaten piece of bread at his head.

Ritzy peeked into the kitchen, watching Ky and Katan as they talked, laughed, and joked with each other. They were so sweet to each other. After a few moments her stomach got the better of her and she announced herself softly, "Um... I'm done." She was still hiding behind the wall so only her face was visible.
When she did step out into the brightly lit kitchen Ritzy looked like a whole different girl all together. It was amazing what a nice bath could do. Ritzy's hair was already starting to dry, the tangles now gone were starting to be replaced by soft dark brown curls. Her skin was light, and just as Ky had said, she smelled like sweet vanilla. Her new clothing was a little large for her, but it did fit nicely. Yes, Ritzy almost looked like a normal little girl again.
Looking at Katan standing in front of a pot of food Ritzy wondered if he always did the cooking. "I-is there anything I can do to help?"

Katan caught the piece of bread in his hands and stuck it in his mouth, holding back his laughter as he picked up the bowl of pasta noodles. Turning around he spotted Ritzy and her curly head and couldn’t help but smile through the piece of bread. “Mmm hmm nmmnm.”
Ky stared at him before giggling. Turning back to Ritzy she smiled warmly at her. “You look so cute Miss Ritzy.” She stepped forwards and ran a hand through her soft curls, placing another kiss on her curly head she stood back up. “All you have to do is enjoy the food.”
Katan sat the food on the table behind Ky, and went to grab a pitcher of punch from the fridge. “Go ahead and sit down guys.” Katan said happily as he closed the fridge door and stepped to the cupboard to grabbed three glasses. Removing his apron he stepped back to the table with the glasses and pitcher, smiling he sat down beside Ky, who was already digging into another piece of bread.
Katan gave her a look before turning towards Ritzy, “Would you like to say grace?”

Ky and Katan had such an interesting relationship which Ritzy didn't know what to make of exactly, she was just glad they were both good people... Ritzy almost laughed when she heard the white-haired man mumble through his stuffed mouth, and when Ky came by and called her cute she blushed. The young girl really didn't get many complements. It was a testament to how comfortable Ritzy was with these two people when Ky bent down to kiss the top of her head again and didn't mind.
“All you have to do is enjoy the food," Ky said in response to Ritzy's offer to help. That wouldn't be too hard at all.
“Go ahead and sit down guys," Katan said rummaging through the fridge for a pitcher of a curious bright red liquid. Doing what she was told Ritzy turned toward the table and spotted Ky already seated and sampling more of the bread. Katan noticed this too which prompted him to cast a disapproving look at the woman. A moment later he shifted a kinder gaze towards Ritzy, "Would you like to say grace?"
For a second Ritzy was confused, but nodded enthusiastically when she remembered saying 'grace' was just another way of 'praying'. Picking a chair closest to Ky Ritzy tried to tug it closer. Despite the fact Ritzy liked Katan and believed he was a good man who wouldn't hurt her, she still couldn't bring herself to sit next to him... Across from him would have been fine, but she really did wish to sit beside Ky. However, she was having a little trouble due to it's sturdy weight, it made a grating sound as it slid across the floor. Wincing the young girl looked at Ky in slight alarm, it was too heavy for the scrawny eight year-old to deal with, unless she wanted to risk scratching the flooring.

Ky giggled slightly at her attempt to push the chair closer to her own chair. Smiling warmly she stood up and carefully moved the chair as close as possible to her and sat back down. Patting the empty seat beside her for Ritzy to sit in.
Katan chuckled as he watched them. She’s still nervous around me, that’s fine. I’m willing to wait, as long as she feels safe here with Ky. He poured some punch for himself and took a long sip, closing his eyes so he could savor the sweet berry flavor. Setting the glass down he glanced over at Ky and nearly choked on his last sip.
Ky was glaring playfully at him. “Ahem.” She cleared her throat, her arms resting peacefully in her lap. “No bread for me, no drink for you!” She pretended to pout as she stared at him, then she turned her head to Ritzy, her trademark smile on her lips. “Would you like to say grace now?”

“Would you like to say grace now?” Ky said after she helped pull the chair next to her own seat.
"Mm-hmm," Ritzy said with another nod as she sat down. The young girl folded her hands and bowed her head but only for a moment. Ritzy looked over at the other woman, her face flushing slightly. Holding her hand to the side of her mouth she leaned close indicating she wanted to say something only to Ky. "Uh... I never said prayers out loud 'afore cuz' usually it's just me," She whispered into Ky's ear. It was different when it was just between her and God; God didn't judge in the same way as humans. Humans were full of criticism and Ritzy was shy about sharing her praise in front of people. She couldn't help it.
"Prayer is often more effective when you share your thoughts with other people child," the Angel's voice told her. That made sense, but it was still hard share.

Ky smiled warmly at her, a soft giggling leaving her lips. “It’s ok Ritzy.” She wrapped an arm around her and hugged her gently before returning her hands before her. Staring down at her she winked, “I’ll do it this time ok?” She whispered, her words only for Ritzy.
Katan stole a few more sips of punch as the two girls whispered to each other. With a content smile on his face he set the glass gently back on the woodened table and sighed. We’ll have to get her back in school, maybe have her see- No. He scowled lightly to himself, but only for a moment before his face calmed again. We’re not going to send her to a counselor. We can help her better than anyone else.
“Ahem.” Katan looked up and noticed Ky staring, or rather glaring, at her. Smiling sheepishly he ran a hand through his hair. Rolling her eyes Ky bowed her head slightly and waited for the others to follow suit.
“Thank you for this home we live in, the food we eat and the love we share. Thank you for the courage to go on and the ability to persevere through our troubles. And thank you for bringing Ritzy to us, and may you bless her and our home with good health and love. Amen.” Ky sent one last silent prayer before opening her eyes.
Glancing down at Ritzy Katan smiled, turning to Ky he noticed how her eyes sparkled at the food before her. Chuckling he picked up the bowl of noodles and handed it to her. “Ok Ritzy, the green bowl is regular pasta sauce, and in the blue bowl is Ky’s favorite spicy sauce. So you can choose which one you’d like to have.” He smiled down at her, his eyes warm as he grabbed the clear pitcher again and poured another glass of punch. Yum!

Ritzy prayed along with Ky adding as many of her own ‘thank yous’ as she could possibly fit into the short amount of time. Ky’s prayer was more beautiful than anything Ritzy could have thought up at the moment, and she agreed with every word. When the prayer was finished the girl smiled.
It was safe to eat now. Katan, who seemed very eager to begin eating quickly addressed the young girl, “Ok Ritzy, the green bowl is regular pasta sauce, and in the blue bowl is Ky’s favorite spicy sauce. So you can choose which one you’d like to have.”
Even for a child like Ritzy it was impossible to remove quick and impulsive behaviors. She wanted to try everything, but of course moderation was a hard concept for any child, much less one that had spend a good portion of her life hungry and miserable… So as she reached for the sauces it didn’t really matter to her how much she put on her plate. Of course she had been smart enough to separate the two sauces so in case she didn’t like one she still had the other one.
Ritzy took a bite of the sauce from the green bowl and thought it was quite lovely, but she wanted to try the spicy sauce too. How bad could it be? They looked quite similar after all. She took a rather large bite. It was tasty. Very good indeed. It wasn’t that spicy…for the first few seconds…
“Bleeaaaa…!” Ritzy cried sticking her tongue out and waving her hands frantically, her face was flushed a bright red. It was really, really super-duper, “Hot, hot, hot!” Eager to cool the burning sensation on her poor tongue Ritzy reached for her cup of juice and gulped down almost half of it before setting it down.
Panting she turned to Ky, “T-that’s your favorite?!” Ritzy couldn’t believe anyone would willingly eat that stuff. It wasn’t that it wasn’t good tasting, but Lord was it fiery!
For Rebecca that was the highlight of dinner. While she was certainly enjoying the calm atmosphere and company the poor girl was still exhausted. She probably hadn’t had a decent amount of sleep in, well, years. It probably wouldn’t be any major shock to her new family to see her start fading out as she was picking at her food. A few heavy yawns and sluggish blinks later secured the young girl’s fate to be sent to bed early…
