Feanaro topped the speed limit the entire way back to the ranger station. Once he got there he quickly parked his car and ran into his cabin, afraid that at any moment Mark would return. Something had happened that night and Feanaro was afraid of what he had seen and, more importantly, heard. He had said he was going to be taking some time off, well he could think of a better reason of getting away from work than a boss who was acting strangly, drives for several hours into the city and then fires a gun. When he got inside he grabbed his backpack and began stuffing stuff in it. He put in some unparishable foods, 2 20 foot sections of rope, enough extra clothing to last a few days, a line and some hooks, a pair of powerful binoculars, some extra stuff necessary to make camp and then he added a few things from his stash. He grabbed a trio of throwing knives, a hand axe, and a heavier hunting knife than usual. Then he changed into hiking clothes, took up his staff and headed out the door. He didn't know what was going on but maybe he'd find the answer if he looked.

As she woke up that morning, Galine had a sudden thought to wander around the outskirts of the Old Woods. She stretched, got out of bed, picked up her cat and walked around the house, seeing who was home. Nobody, oddly enough, but nothing worrisome. She made her usual rounds on the property - feed the cats, pick up the house, feed the damn goat, pump some water, and bathe - then decided to head off in a direction she never wandered too far off to. As she reached the edge of her property, she made a quick double-check that she had her small knife on her. No particular reason why she did it, or why she brought it, it was just a strange feeling growing in the pit of her stomach. Shaking the thought off and drowning it with some blackberries, she continued along her way.

It was abnormally quiet through out the Brenton county national park. There was still the sound of birds, small game, and the rush of the river that ran through the center, but there was much less. It almost seemed like Nature who normally spoke in a robust and jovial voice was instead whispering; trying to avoid being heard by those who walked within it. The morning's frost was unussually bitter as well, for it was several degrees lower this day than the one before it.
The land of the great American red woods was cold and quiet.

Kazu walked through the forest, his metalic dog Beamer at his side. For some reason the forest around him made him feel uncomfortable instead of cheery as it had the day before. It hadn't been long since Kazu had started his journey, but all adventures start somewhere and his started here, in the forest. As he walked he kept an eye out for anyone that could help him on his quest.

As Galine continued her walk, she began to notice how quiet the forest seemed. Becoming paranoid, she jumped into a tree and began slowly moving from branch to branch, following the path below her. She didn't spy anything unusual, but better safe than sorry... she thought to herself.
Suddenly, she spied a glint of metallic in the distance near the ground. Crouching into the tree branch, she tried to get a better view, then began to inch her way towards the glimmer.

As much attention Kazu paid to his surroundings he failed to notice his pursuer. He walked nervously on unsure of where he was going. Beamer at his side just followed his master. unalerted at first by the follower but as Galine approached the metalic dog became more alert, not yet warning Kazu but waiting for the unknown pursuer to try something.
