The early morning light lit up the surface of the pristine lake. Small waves tinted in white, worked their way slowly and carelessly to the shore. Out side the waters no one stood, school was back in session and the kids were all tucked cozily in desks and chairs, rather then waking up after a long party. A pair of jeans, a white shirt, a heavier black jacket and a black towel laid in a pile beneath the shade of a tree.
A bird flew over the top of the water, barely skimming it’s legs along the surface. It landed, wading in the middle and minding its own business. Then, without warning, the water was disrupted and before the bird a man emerged. The bird squawked wildly in surprise and opened it’s wings, taking flight and hurrying away. The mans eyes scoured the shore to make sure he was alone, once satisfied he began to back stroke back to his clothes.
Katan crawled from the water and collapsed beside his clothes. With Ky in an actual school his freedom had grown slightly, so he planned on spending every morning here, studying the lake with daylight, instead of moonlight. Of course he would rather spend his mornings teaching Ky at home, but she had been resilient in her Endeavour and Katan had finally cracked.
The fins along the backs of his arms and legs were slowly disappearing back into his skin. His gills were slowly vanishing and he knew that his eyes were growing darker. Sitting under the tree he watched the lake for a few moments, the bird he had startled earlier was back and wading nervously in the middle.
