Elle Kites sighed slightly as she trudged through the halls of her High School towards the cafeteria. "I'm so glad I'm almost done with this all this crap" she thought dodging groups of her chattering schoolmates.
As she entered the crowded lunch room Elle made her way to the left-hand wall where a line was formed for those purchasing lunches. Usually Elle brown-bagged it or went hungry, but this morning had her rushing around for her missing homework pages and she didn't have time to make one. And her stomach was growling terribly, so she had to get something...but it was hardly worth it. She knew the school's lunches were terrible. She'd be better off gnawing on a cardboard box.
That and she hated standing in line. A feeling which was reiterated by a group of freshmen standing behind her. She could hear them talking about her in a stage whisper.
"You see that girl in front of us?"
That would open the floodgates of cruel words.
"She looks like a freak."
Yes...now they were paying attention. Elle wanted to punch something.
"What's with her clothes?"
What? Her clothing wasn't that strange. Today miss Kites was wearing one of her favorite outfits... A long modified black prom dress with a pair of jeans worn underneath because it was such a short dress, and her favorite silver heals.
"Forget her clothing, what's with her makeup?! Are those contacts?"
She was wearing a thick shade of black lipstick, and one couldn't help but notice the corners of her lips were turning down in a mean scowl.
"Do you think she's dying her hair? It looks terrible."
That was the last straw. Normally on days like this Elle would wear a hat or something, but her room was such a mess right now she couldn't find one to go with her clothing. Besides, those morons shouldn't be talking about someone like that anyway. How inconsiderate and rude!
Elle turned around viciously and flipped off the group of younger students. They recoiled for a moment and then burst into laughter when Elle stepped away as the lunch line advanced.
Rolling her eyes and dripping in anger Elle proceeded to buy her lunch and stomp off to an open table. Nearly throwing her food on the table Elle sat down and started eating. She hardly tasted the nasty burger she was so annoyed. High school... "Yeah, I'll be glad when this is over."

Mark was stepping through the cafeteria, determined not to let anything bother him other then the line to buy food at the teachers little cafe section. He'd already had his secret cigarette break so he wasn't hurtin' for the smoke, but he hadn't eaten since last night and his stomach ached with emptiness. The cafeteria was always so crowded and hard to get through, especially on these bitter cold, rainy looking days. Students assumed there was a heater in this building, but with the amount of times and from all the different directions from which a student opened a door from the outside, the poor little machine was hard pressed to do what little it did. The teacher's lounge was actually warm though, and he could set his walkie talkie on the table and look strained to listen to it, and no one would feel obliged to talk to him. He made his way through the crowds of kids quickly, most of them getting out of his way assuredly. He needed only stop at one point when his direction was turned to the student made line. There was a group of freshmen he new to be rowdy were standing behind that senior he thought was weird. It was obvious that the former group were talking about the latter in front of them, and while they tried to keep it hushed, he could see them pointed and even hear a couple from where he stood. Two of them were afriad; as though her choice in apparel would actually threaten their life style. He didn't care about their fear, he paid more attention to the growing anger in the girl; he could feel it stoking inside him as it would in her and he wondered where she'd take it. There was sort of a tense moment before she whirled around to face her antagonists, but, the ending result was a little comical. He himself could hardly save against the slip of snorting that crept through his normally stone lips. He watched her get her food and slam it down and he knew she'd probably take no further offense against the kids, or hopefully any one else today. Her own annoyed self discomforted Mark, so he began to move back towards to teachers cafe again; resolved at keeping an eye on her.

It was days like this that made Elle wish she were truly deaf. However, Elle was too proud to have feigned deafness just to play the pity card on those freshmen fools. Sure they would have felt terrible, maybe even it would have ruined their day, but then she couldn't stay mad at them... It was strange, wanting to hold a small grudge, but Elle did so often. She was often angry and unwilling to let go of it even though she knew she would be better off without those negative feelings. And so, she fumed in silence, eating her meager lunch.
"Ugh..." she thought with an exasperated sigh as she finished her food and walked out of the lunch room, "I have no idea why I can't just calm down. I shouldn't even be all that pissed off, it's no big deal really. I get it, this is high school, people are just ignorant pests at this age, but it's just so annoying!" Elle had often considered seeing a physiological counselor for all her problems, but she just didn't feel it was ultimately necessary. Plus those quacks would probably only try to get her to start talking again anyway, and she wasn't willing to even go there.
As she walked, she happened to hear another snippet of conversation from the same group of freshmen who had been bothering her earlier.
"I dare you. Go ask!"
What was it now? Can't they just hurry and grow up? What age was it that boys were supposed to stop being retarded again?
"Fine, fine!"
Elle heard heavy footfalls behind her. While she was tempted to just shrug it off and walk out faster, she did want some excuse to put them in their place. Perhaps she would play deaf for them after all, if only to literally spell out why she hated them. She stopped in her tracks as a finger tapped her shoulder. She turned with a questioning expression on her face.
"Hey," the freshmen was a pimple-faced twerp who looked like he was imitating a stupid rapper, "Are you one of tho--"
Before he could even finish his sentence Elle started signing a quick list of insults she knew no one would catch. The boy's mouth gaped for a moment, not quite sure that she was using sign-language. She ended her words with a spelling of a nasty four-letter word and proceeded to jab him in the chest with her middle finger for emphasis.
"Yeah that makes me feel better. What a moron he looks like he doesn't know whether or not to feel guilt. Sure he'll justify himself later, but doubt is a great seed..." It was not confrontational in a typical sense, but it was justifying to Elle. She turned around wearing a slight smile. Even though she really wanted to start throwing punches, she'd been the 'better person', technically. With that she continued down the hall. With any luck, that would be the last person to even talk to her all day.

Terry had just finished his shift in the cafeteria. Since earlier that morning he hadn't been feeling too great, he figured it would have been better just to leave the lunch at home. He didn't know his condition would improve so greatly though. By lunch time the exhaustion had been replace by an empty, caved in feeling in his stomach, and his over active nose and had quited slightly. Still, they made him wear a little medical mask; which was fine by him. He worked mostly in the back any way. Now he walked out of the back side of the cafeteria brandishing a left over lunch and examining the new little burns the fryer had given him. Terry rounded the corner with a misplaced walk of urgency. He didn't really know where he was going, none of his clubs were meeting today for lunch, and while he new enough people to sit with one of a few groups, it was late in the lunch and he didn't really want to talk much any ways. He was hungry. But with such a walk of expectancy, he should have known where he was going, or at least have been paying attention. He hardly looked up to see where he was going, letting little glimpses lead him through the school. This method didn't even get him pass the cafeteria safely. One simple glimpse made him realize he was just about to crash into another student. Instead he dodged to her left, ending up directly in front of her and effectively cutting her off. He kept walking, but only enough to get out of her way before turning around to apologize quickly. When he did, he flushed with embarrassment. "Ahh, oh, um, Sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going..." is what he said, but inside he thought 'Oh crap, everyone says she's deaf... I'm so stupid, she probably can't here anything I'm saying... "Umm... are you ok." He tried motioning with his hands, but they were full. Then he realized he was also still wearing his mask, as if the situation had hopes of getting better...

Elle almost laughed, almost. As she was walking, hardly paying attention, she suddenly found herself face-to-mask with one of whom she assumed was kitchen staff. He too, seemed to have been not looking where he was going because he seemed to have been startled.
"Ahh, oh, um, Sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going..." he said, "Umm... are you ok."
Lydia could practically hear is train of thought, like everyone else he assumed she was deaf. This was reinforced by his vain attempt at mimicking sign-language which was thwarted by the fact he was carrying things. Fortunately Elle was not truly deaf, just silenced by will and understood his apology easily even from behind his mask.
Elle forced a smile and waved her hand in a dismissive manner. The albino woman then took a step to her left and gave an over-exaggerated bow, her unique way of giving the man his rightful passage down the hall. "I'm just glad we didn't slam into each other. That would have made today even worse. I'd have had to kill him. God I hate this school." Still her face shown with a private amusement, for some strange reason her mood seemed to have brightened.

This his actual lunch held in a box in his left hand, Terry hooked the mask with the fore arm of the hand holing his milk, and pushed it down off his face to rest under his chin. Her hand waving and bowing kind of confused him, but he figured enough to understand that she didn't seem to mind. Still, it was careless of him to act so much like some of those freshmen kids who ran around or screwed up the line he had to work at. Still unsure about her capability to hear he shrugged, smiled, and then attempted to bow himself. He probably looked like a freak though. Not that she looked fully normal bowing either, but at least she had the outfit and the attitude to pull it off. Terry probably looked and definitely felt out of place. He kept smiling though, even as he returned from the gesture.

"I didn't think he'd return a bow. He's kinda' freaky." Elle had to fight to keep her face in a neutral position, that guy really did look ridiculous. Then again, she wasn't exactly normal herself, she had to admit it. "Aw, screw it," she thought and let a genuine grin spread across her face. Whoever said 'normal' was 'cool' anyway?
Digging into her pocket Elle fetched her notepad and pen and wrote a note.
It read; Hey, sorry about that man. Didn't mean to be a bother.
She held out the page for the man to read. Luckily for the both of them, Elle had wonderful penmanship so her handwritten notes were just as effective as speaking, at least for most folks.

Terry grinned at her smile, but his grin turned into a confused scowl as she busted out the pen and paper and just started righting. He didn't realize what she was trying to do until a couple moments after she'd stuck the paper out for him to read. Then with an enlightened smile he leaned in to read what was written there. Thinking to himself, he wondered 'So can she hear me then?' and inwardly he decided to try and test if she could. First though he got his initial reaction out of the way. "Oh no, you're no bother. I'm sure I'm the bother haha." Then, as he was still doubled over to see the paper, he wondered out loud. "Hey, you have really good hand writing." He then stood up straight again and looked at her. "You know, the volunteer club is looking for a new club secretary. Ya know, some one to write down the going on's of each meeting. You should really come and check it out! We only meet like, once a week and you probably wouldn't have to do any volunteer work if you didn't want to. Yeah and it looks pretty sweet on a college application..."

"Hmm..." Elle thought considering his offer, "I'm not in any 'clubs' not that a volunteer one sounds fun, but I guess writing all day's what I do anyway."
She nodded slowly as she wrote a response.
It's not often I get complements on my handwriting, although I'll gladly take it.
Oh and I'm Elle by the way.
As for your little club job... Yeah, I'll probably pop by to check it out. I own a laptop too if digital notes would be better. I think I might type faster than I write by hand anyway. And Lord knows I could use the creds for college!
At the end of her note she scrawled a quick smiley face.
She passed the notebook back over to the guy to read.

Damien found himself standing on one of the planters edges outside of the cafeteria. His cell phone next to his ear as he finished up his conversation. Once the other end had hung up he flipped his phone shut and slid it into his pocket. He slowly stepped down from the edge onto the sidewalk and made his way inside the building.
The cafeteria was still crowded by the lines for food had died down much. Earlier that day Damien had spoken to one of Terry's friends, and an interesting conversation was brought up and a very important event was brought to his and his fathers attention.

Terry read the note quickly, his lips moving the match every word that crossed his eyes. When he came to the part about her agreeing to probably join, his eyes lightened up with happy surprise. He'd figured she wasn't a very social person; the kind that would regularly never agree to join a school club. He'd plan to read about some detestation of school spirit of some supposed lack of time they both knew was probably non-existent. Such thoughts were quickly wiped from his mind and he finished the note with a new smile on his face. "All right! umm, so yeah, you can pop in any time. We meet on Wednesdays directly after school, and if you need a ride home after or something there are a bunch of people there who can drive and really don't mind. That's how I get home any ways. You know we will need the secretary soon, but if you can't make it for a couple weeks that's probably cool too. We need one, but no one seems whiling to step up to the plate. Most of us are here just for the marks towards college, we're not too enthusiastic about it... But yeah, if you join this Wednesday you'll get a shot at getting a bunch of free stuff at the Chirstmas Parade this Friday!" That was all Terry could think to say. Normally he didn't lead this much in a conversation, but seeing as she didn't talk at all, he figured getting to know her would mean doing a lot of the talking. He raked his mind for a new thing to say, but it came easily as he was holing his quickly cooling lunch. "Hey, ya know, we could probably head over there and sign you up now, if you wanted? I mean, if you don't have anything else to do. It's just down and around the hall I think, and she's cool with people chilling in her class during lunch."

Listening to the guy talk Elle wondered just what she had gotten herself into. Normally she didn't just volunteer for things...so joining the "Volunteer Club" was like going against everything she stood for. "Ah well," she mentally rolled her eyes, "I'll only have to do it till the end of the year...and he did say I could get free stuff. That would kinda' rock..."
She wrote short response that summarized her feelings on the entire matter:
Sounds like a plan. Lead the way my good man!

Terry read the message quickly, and glanced back up at her a moment when he was done. Smiling he said "Hey, that rhymed..." his juvenile sense asserted it's self as always. He didn't really wait for a response before taking the note literally. "Cool, ok it's this way..." The trip was quick, but he didn't really say anything. Ms. Carter's room reflected her cluttered life style. The walls were covered with decorative calendars and movie posters. The white boards were all marked up with her last lecture and current assignments and her desk was no better. The walls around it were plastered with pictures of family and students. The desk it's self was in the corner of the room opposite from which they entered. It was covered picture frames and files and was flanked in the front by a row of desks. As they entered she was biting a pencil and staring at her monitor. The room was other wise empty. Terry smiled and waves his chocolate milk as walked up and took the closest seat to her. Setting his stuff down he said. "Hey, Ms. Carter, are we still looking for a student secretary? 'Cause I met this... uh" Terry just realized he had absolutely no idea who it was he had been talking to. Blushing again he turned to the girl and said. "Well, this is Ms. Carter, the staff supervisor, and I'm Terry Gaviolla." Terry spoke with his hands, motioning with both to the teacher first, then to himself, and finally with one hand outstretched to shake hers.

"Hey, that rhymed..." he spoke with an amused tone prompting Elle to double check her note.
"So it does. I hate that. I can never come up with a rhyme, but then they just happen like that. Ugh." She rolled her eyes and followed along behind her new acquaintance.
Soon Elle found herself within the crowded classroom of Ms. Carter. While she didn't have the woman this semester, Elle had been in several classes in the past. Not that she could remember right off the bat what they were, it had been a few years...
"Hey, Ms. Carter, are we still looking for a student secretary? 'Cause I met this... uh..." He faltered to a stop having not seen, or having forgotten Elle's name already, "Well, this is Ms. Carter, the staff supervisor, and I'm Terry Gaviolla."
Elle waved a polite hello to Ms. Carter and then reached out to shake Terry's hand firmly. When she pulled away she opened her note book to the previous page and circled her name adding above it her last name and a short message.
Elle...Kites. Not exactly a memorable name, but it works.
Her face held a grin. People rarely remembered her name, after all it was far easier to call her, "Mute", "that weird girl", "hey you", or "blue-eyes". It didn't really bother her in the slightest provided people stayed polite when addressing her. She hoped that's how her body language expressed itself anyway. She didn't want to embarrass Terry anymore than he already seemed to be. It was always rough forgetting someone's name...or in Elle's case that and remembering to spell it correctly!
After the greetings were all said and done Elle turned her notebook over to Ms. Carter with another message.
I'd be honored to take the secretary position. I write swiftly...or if you'd prefer, I can type swiftly too.

Terry waited until the greetings were all figured out before he turned to his lunch. The burger was only nuke warm now, but he didn't mind. He ate it quickly and downed the milk to follow it. The whole while he made sure to keep his attention on what was going on with the club.
Ms. Carter hadn't given too good a look at the two that had come in. Students and club members would bring their friends in all the time, so she was numbed to new faces by now. She didn't really know whom she was dealing with until the note pad was passed before her face. She was shocked for a second at first, but she dealt with it quickly. Glancing up she got a better look at the girl, then smiled. "Well thank you Elle. Yes actually we are looking for a good secretary. And yeah, what ever would be easier for you would be perfect for us! We would need actual physical records, but we can hook your computer up to a school printer after each meeting or something." Taking off her glasses Ms. Carter bit her lip in concentration. The last bit of what the girl would need to knew came to her moments later. "Umm.. oh yes. Also the club staff meets every Wednesday right after school, then once a month all the club members meet in the cafeteria to sign up for volunteer work and what not. Any one can go to either meetings, but we see far fewer members at the weekly staff meetings. Oh and we'll also be meeting Wednesday night to go over what we'll need for the Christmas festival."
((Hey! I'm gunna set up a school club for this.))
